Creepy Crawly Spider Whoopie Pies {SWEET}

Halloween is right around the corner, are you ready? Here is something fun you can 'whoop up' with the kids on a lazy afternoon or even for dessert in the next few days. It is a 'FAST' craft of a creepy crawly Halloween dessert Spider Whoopie Pies! Whoopie Pies are traditionally a circular chocolate sponge cake top and bottom sandwich with a creamy center filling. These were so fun to watch the kids make; I, of course, assisted with the cream centers but they had a blast decorating the outsides and assembling the legs! The ingredients are easy to find at your local grocery store or at a bakery supply and party stores have the eyeball candies, I got mine at party city. My son actually thought they were real eyeballs (?) and he ate his entire whoopie pie and left them, I asked, "why didn't you eat those?" he answered, "Because I don't want to eat eyeballs, I don't think they taste good!" HAHHAHAhahaha I said, "Those are fake 'candy' eyes, I would NEVER give you real eyeballs to do anything with....let alone decorate your halloween cookie!!!!!

Supplies:
1 package of Devil's Food cake mix (18 oz)
1 Cup Milk
5 Tablespoons of Flour
1 Cup Shortening
1 Cup Sugar
2 Teaspoons Vanilla
Lemonheads
Red Hots

Second Option Filling: (if you want to go to store, or have these on hand)
4 ounces Cream Cheese
1 jar Marshmallow Cream
1/4 Cup Butter softened
Mix cream cheese and butter together until silky then fold marshmallow cream into it. Add option food coloring if desired!

Optional:
Whoopie Pie Pan
Food Coloring

*Additional Ingredients for cake mix you choose. Example: Oil, Water etc.
Cookie Sheets

Prep:
Pre-heat Oven to directed temperature on devil's food cake mix box.

Step 1:
Combine the cake mix as directed on the package you choose. Cover a cookie sheet with parchment paper or foil. Pour cake batter carefully onto the cookie sheet in 3 inch circle, no larger. Bake as directed on package. Set aside to cool before taking off cookie sheet.

Step 2:
Creamy center filling is made on the stove top. Combine milk and flour. Stir this mixture CONSTANTLY until becomes thicker, do not let burn. It should turn into a paste consistency when finished. Set aside to cool.
Next combine shortening and sugar, beating it in a mixer or a hand mixer until light and fluffy. Then stir in the vanilla and the four/milk mixture. Beat entire mixture until it doubles in its size.

Step 3:
Assemble the Whoopie Pies. Put cream into piping bag for best results, or spoon onto cakes by hand. Use the cream frosting to 'glue' eyes to top of head. Stick licorice legs into the side, remember 8 legs for spiders....4 on each side. Add candy yellow or red smiles.
