Gel DIY Air Fresheners using Kool-Aid

How to make your own Gel DIY Air Fresheners! But instead of using traditional food coloring I am using Kool-Aid mix in this tutorial for a 2 in 1 advantage that adds both color and scent to your Gel Air Fresheners. To intensify the scent and keep a long lasting smell, add essential oils that compliment each Kool-aid pack. Just about every household has some Kool-Aid in the pantry, especially in the warm spring and summer months. It's affordable and so versatile, see my Cotton Candy DIY Sugar Scrub that uses a similar process. This is a DIY project you can make together with your children to get them in the kitchen and learn a little lesson in chemistry and science...how gelatin is prepped as a liquid and then turns into a solid when cool. These Gel DIY Air Fresheners can be made for any occasion and makes a great, unique, homemade gift. I made a few from one box of gelatin and my husband keeps his Chocolate Covered Cherry gel air freshener on his desk!

Step 1:

Gather the glass jars you will use. Either re-purpose glass jars or you can make them in Mason Jars.
Place candy and Kool-Aid mix of your choice at the bottom of designated jars.

Step 2:

Bring 1 Cup of Water to a boil in pot. Change to low heat, keep on stove and then dissolve all 4 packets of gelatin in hot water with a whisk. Dissolve completely prior to moving on.

Step 3:

Next add 1 Tablespoon of Salt. Dissolve completely.

Step 4:

Remove from heat and pour in the next 1 Cup of Water, room temperature.

Step 5:

Then place a funnel into jar and pour in gelatin. Stir the liquid and Kool-Aid mix to combine and dissolve. (I made 3 Gel Air Fresheners)

Step 6:

Add 8 to 10 drops of single Essential oil of your choice to each jar. Pair complimentary essential oil scents that correspond to the Kool-Aid mix you choose.

Example:
-Lemon Oil / Pink Lemonade
-Orange Oil/ Orange
-Cinnamon Bark/ Apple
-Lemon Oil/ Blue Berry
-Lemon Oil/ Grape

Let each jar have time to cool and solidify for about 24hrs.
I didn't have any issue working with the gelatine, it actually cooled off a lot after adding the 2nd cup of water. My kids were able to safely stir the Kool-aid at the bottom of each jar!
Decorate with Washi Tape and you are done!
They all turned out great and smell really flavorful and delicious, the effect we were going for. I like scents that remind me of sweet treats.

  1. I love this post! My only experience with essential oils is lavender and tea tree oil. This is post is intriguing! Do you mind posting more mash ups of using essential oils and their kool-aid compliments? For instance, how you made the chocolate and skittles one? Thank you!

  2. What a cute idea!! How long does something like this typically last? Any mold issues?

    1. It lasts about a month for the size I made, smallest mason jar, and so far no mold issue.
